From Old Japanese. First attested in the Nihon Shoki of 720.[1]

Analyzable as a compound of (mi, see below) +‎ (saki, tip, point; promontory).[1][2][3][4][5][6]

The mi prefix is likely the honorific prefix (mi-), and the term misaki is attested explicitly with the spelling 御碕 (mi-saki) in the Nihon Shoki.[1]

Alternative theories as to the identity of the (mi) include:

  • (mi, water, bound prefix form of (mizu)), although the semantics this suggests may instead mean “water tip”, i.e. a jutting-out of water, not of land — an inlet.
  • Shift from (umi, sea), with the same consideration as above.
