Glyph origin[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *lɯm) : semantic (water) + phonetic ().

Etymology[edit]

“to soak; excessive; to let loose; licentious”
Related to (OC *lɯm, “licentious”), (OC *lɯm, “heavy rain”) and (OC *ɡ·rɯm, “continued rain”) (Wang, 1982). More allofams possibly include (OC *l̥ʰjɯmʔ, “liquid”) and (OC *l'um, “to submerge”) (Schuessler, 2007). Probably related to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *l-(t/d)jam (to fill, flat).
